Should I buy a Grand Piano?

There are many reasons to buy a grand piano. The main reasons are look, sound, and action.

Look

The look of a grand piano is unmistakable. Grand pianos are not only a musical instrument but also a piece of furniture. These are the typical finishes grand pianos that are available:

  • Polished Ebony
  • Satin Ebony
  • Polished Mahogany
  • Oak
  • Polished White (á la John Lennon)

There are many sizes of grand pianos (depending on manufacturer). These are the basic sizes:

  • 4'11"
  • 5'3"
  • 5'8"
  • 6'1"
  • 6'7"
  • 7'
  • 9'

Sound

There are 2 main reasons grand pianos sound so much better than vertical pianos:

  1. String length
  2. Soundboard surface area

The longer the strings in a piano, the better a piano is going to sound. Since you can fit longer strings in a bigger piano, bigger pianos are going to have a better sound than baby grands (5'3" or smaller). Bigger pianos are going to have a "bassier" sound. Also, different manufacturers have either more mellow or more bright sounds. To see which type you like better, please demo grand pianos in our store.

Action

The action of a piano is comprised of many mechanisms that propel a hammer to strike each string. In a grand piano, gravity is used to pull the hammer back to resting position instead of a spring. Gravity pulls the hammer back much faster than a spring. This gives an experienced player the quicker action to play faster passages.
